FACTS ON MYANMAR

The name of the country:
Myanmar or Burma?
The words 'Myanmar Pyay' are seen on a stone
inscription dated 597 ME (Myanmar Era) or 1235 CE from
the Bagan period during the reign of King Kya Swar,
(1234-1250).
This is the earliest written record of the name of the
country.
The front side of this 3ft-high stone is damaged in
the middle section. The reverse side, better protected
from the elements, has on the first line of the
inscription the two words 'Myanmar Pyay' which means
Myanmar Country.
